North America's deepest river gorge

Hells Canyon is North America's deepest canyon. Carved by the Snake River, the remote gorge forms part of the boundary between Idaho and Oregon. By the time it meets Idaho's Seven Devils mountains, Hells Canyon is 8,000 feet deep (2,440 meters)! In places, the canyon walls rise vertically for almost half a mile.
