North America's largest land animal

The American bison, sometimes called the American buffalo, is the largest land animal in North America. An adult male can stand as tall as a man at the shoulder and weigh more than a ton (900 kg)! Once, tens of millions roamed the plains, but hunters killed all but a few hundred. About 500,000 exist today.
